2021 World Games dates clash with postponed Summer Olympics

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – The International Olympic Committee has announced new dates for the 2020 Olympic Games postponed in Tokyo, Japan. The new dates, July 23 to August 8, 2021, clash in part with those of the 2021 World Games, which were scheduled to be held from July 15 to 25, 2021, according to the International World Games Association.

The IWGA will now urgently examine alternative options and coordinate all actions with different stakeholders to ensure the success of the Games. In anticipation of this decision, the IWGA had already been in close contact with the IOC, and they were committed to helping the World Games overcome the major challenges created by this decision.

CBS 42 has contacted World Games CEO Nick Sellers and has released the following statement.

With the announcement of the postponement of the 2020 Olympics, there has been much speculation regarding its impact on the 2021 Birmingham World Games. We have been monitoring the situation closely and have remained in constant contact with the International World Games Association (IWGA).

For now, it would be premature to speculate on the potential changes to our event until we receive more information from the IOC on their specific plans. However, we remain unwavering in our commitment to provide a world class experience in Birmingham and are confident in a positive outcome for our athletes, fans and community. We will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.

Nick Sellers, CEO of World Games
