Anthony Doto Obituary (1937 – 2022) – West Chester, PA
Anthony Joseph Doto (August 11, 1937 – February 20, 2022) Anthony “Tony” Doto transitioned peacefully home with his family on February 20, 2022. Tony graduated from Downingtown Senior High School in 1955 where he was an academic and a outstanding sportsman, serving as a member of the student council for 3 years and as vice-president of his senior class. He has also written twice in basketball and 3 times each in football and baseball. Although the Philadelphia Phillies organization invited him to baseball training camp, he instead chose to marry Judith “Judy” Doto (née Schultz) and enlist in the United States Air Force. He honorably served a four-year tour of duty in what was then an elite new unit of radio interceptors trained to copy radio transmissions for military intelligence. Tony returned to Downingtown to raise his family and remained there for much of his adult life. He graduated from the Barber School of Philadelphia and worked as a licensed Downingtown barber, full-time or part-time, for decades. He cut the hair of countless locals, neighbors, friends, policemen, priests and disabled veterans. Although he continued to cut his hair, Tony joined the Downingtown Post Office in the early 1970s and worked as a postman until he retired to care for his father full time in the 1990s. Thereafter he worked part-time for many years as a driver for World Travel until he was over 80 when his health began to fail. Tony leaves behind a legacy of intelligence, wisdom, laughter, kindness and compassion, and he served as an unshakeable foundation for his family. He was and is a role model for all of us, and he will forever be remembered and loved by those who knew him. Tony was predeceased by his mother and father, Antoinette and Alfonso “Funzi” Doto, his brother and sister, Alfonzo “Al” Doto and Margaret Nastase, and Judy Doto, the mother of his children, Kathy and Dave. Tony and Judy divorced in 1975 after 20 years of marriage but remained lifelong friends until his death in April 2000. Tony is survived by his devoted companion of 36 years, Theresa Undercoffler, his children Thomas “TJ” Undercoffler (Alison) and Tara Undercoffler whom Tony loved as his own, daughter, Kathy Costello, son David Doto (Jenna), daughter-in-law Lori Young-Markel, grandchildren Mark Taneyhill, Christina Terebelo (Brad), D Ryan Doto (Olivia), Alexandra Butler, Bronte Butler (James), Savannah Butler, Chloe Doto and Skylar Undercoffler, 6 great-grandchildren, and his nieces and nephews, Francis Doto (Shelly) and Michael Doto, and Steve Nastase (June) and Anthony Nastase (Patty). At his request, Tony will be cremated and he will be buried in the spring at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Downingtown. All are welcome, and more information will be provided at a later date. A private celebration of his life for family members only will be held immediately afterwards. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
